1. Introduction

SubPIP ("we", "our", or "the extension") is a browser extension that plays videos in Picture-in-Picture with their subtitles, with caption styling, optional translation and an optional Premium upgrade. This policy explains what data SubPIP handles, why, and your choices. We do not sell your personal data and we do not use it for advertising.

2. Data we handle

Everyone (stored in your browser):

  • Settings – caption style, playback speed, translation language, whether Auto PiP is on and which sites Auto PiP is on for. Stored in Chrome's sync storage, so they follow your Chrome profile. They are not sent to our servers, and a site is never told about the other sites on your list.
  • Captions you picked on a site – if you point at the captions on a site SubPIP did not know, the site's name and which element you chose are saved in Chrome's sync storage, so the choice follows your Chrome profile. They are not sent to our servers.
  • Translation cache – caption lines and their translations may be cached in your browser (IndexedDB) to avoid translating the same line twice. This stays on your device.
  • Your subtitle files – a subtitle file you load in the Picture-in-Picture window is read by your browser and is not uploaded. (If translation is on, its lines are translated like any other caption.)
  • Captions from speech (Premium) – are written on your device by Chrome's own speech recognition. The video's sound is not sent to us or to anyone else; Chrome downloads a speech pack from Google the first time a language is used.
  • Saved lines (Premium) – caption lines you save, with their translation and the title and address of the page, are kept on your computer (the extension's local storage) until you clear them. They are not sent to our servers.

If you sign in or buy Premium:

  • Account – your email address and sign-in state, handled by Firebase Authentication.
  • Premium status – whether your account is Premium and your license key. Stored in Firebase Firestore.
  • Purchase record – when you pay, we store the Razorpay payment ID, the email used for the purchase, the amount and currency, and the license key issued. If you start the purchase from the extension while signed in, we also record which account it is for, so Premium can be turned on for that account automatically. We never receive or store your card or bank details.

If you answer the question shown after uninstalling:

  • Uninstall feedback – the reason you pick, any comment you write and the SubPIP version. It is stored in Firebase Firestore and emailed to us. It is not linked to your account or email address.

If you visit our website:

  • Visits – each page you open is counted with Vercel Web Analytics: the page's address (never the part after "?", so not an email address or checkout code that a link carried), the site you came from, the time, your country, region and city as worked out from the request, and your browser, operating system and type of device. The counter sets no cookies. To count one visitor once, Vercel makes a short-lived code from the request and discards it after 24 hours. Visits are not linked to your account or email address. The extension itself has no analytics: only visits to the website are counted.

3. How we use it

  • To show videos in Picture-in-Picture with subtitles and playback controls on the sites where you use SubPIP.
  • To translate captions, only when you turn translation on. Where your browser can translate by itself (Chrome 138 or newer), captions are translated on your device and are not sent to anyone; Chrome downloads a language pack from Google the first time a language is used. Otherwise, and until that language pack has arrived: free users' captions go to MyMemory directly from your browser, and Premium users' captions go to our server, which checks that your account is Premium and translates them with DeepL; the server keeps a shared cache of translated caption lines (the text and its translation, not who asked for it) so repeated lines are not sent again. If the server can't translate a line, your browser uses MyMemory instead.
  • To create, verify and activate your Premium license, to email it to you after purchase (and again if you use "Lost your license key?"), and to let you recover it with "Check payment".
  • To show the right price: our website reads your browser's time zone to show ₹999 in India or $15 elsewhere. The time zone is used only in your browser and is not sent to us.
  • To see how many people visit our website, which pages they open and where they come from. We look at these as totals only.

4. Services that process data for us

Each of these services has its own privacy policy:

  • Google Firebase – sign-in (Authentication) and account and license data (Firestore). Firebase privacy.
  • Vercel – hosts our website and the server functions that confirm payments, activate licenses and forward Premium translation requests, and counts visits to our website (Vercel Web Analytics). Vercel may keep short-lived request logs. Vercel privacy.
  • MyMemory (Translated) – translates caption text when translation is on. We do not control how long they keep it. MyMemory privacy.
  • DeepL – translates Premium users' caption text. DeepL privacy.
  • Resend – sends your license email and receipt. Resend privacy.
  • Razorpay – processes Premium payments on our website, in rupees (INR) or US dollars (USD). Your payment details go to Razorpay, not to us. Our checkout page loads Razorpay's payment script, which sets a cookie of its own in your browser. Razorpay privacy.

5. Browser permissions

SubPIP asks only for what it needs:

  • activeTab – to start Picture-in-Picture in the tab you are viewing when you click the SubPIP icon or press Alt+P.
  • scripting – to add the Picture-in-Picture player and captions to that page.
  • storage – to save your settings and sign-in state in your browser.
  • Access to all sites (optional) – requested only if you turn on Auto PiP, so SubPIP can be ready on every page to open Picture-in-Picture when you switch tabs. You can turn Auto PiP off at any time, which removes this access. SubPIP does not read, collect or send your browsing history.

6. Storage and retention

Settings and the translation cache stay in your browser; uninstalling the extension or clearing its data removes them. Account, license and purchase records are kept while your account exists, and purchase records may be kept longer where needed for accounting or refunds. You can ask us to delete your account at any time. Website visit counts are kept by Vercel as statistics that are not tied to you.

7. Your choices

You can use SubPIP without signing in, keep translation off, turn Auto PiP off, remove permissions, or uninstall the extension at any time. If you have an account you can sign out in the popup, and you can ask us to access, correct or delete your data by contacting us. A content blocker can stop the website's visit counter; the website works the same without it.

8. Changes

If we change this policy we will update it here and change the "Last updated" date above.
